"i was notified by a poster who cannot post anymore because they have been banned" - Lightinspiration.
Lightinspiration - the reason that person (probably "timrayphoto" - whose posts I actually did enjoy reading as he would go up against fjblau incessently) was "blocked" was because he said, "I'm out of here, and I will not be returning to this blog".
People who say that they're leaving get blocked, because I am trying to help them keep their resolve of not coming back.   That's always been my policy - if you say you're leaving, then I respond by saying, "don't let the door hit you on the way out".  It's not a mean thing, it's a helpful thing.

Hmm no one has ever said that to me. Then again only two people ever read my blog so that's probably why.

This blog is almost like a forum...Sometimes moderating the posts isn't such a bad idea.
There is no problem with back and forth banter, but when it gets personal and hateful it's time to cut them loose.
I don't recall what was posted or know what was said, but it's Garys blog and if he wants someone banned then he can ban em.

Actually Gary, what he said was that he was leaving the blog UNTIL you start posting about photography again and then he will be back..read his post again.

Here is what he posted on October 2..word for word.

"Gary, I have decided to say goodbye to your blog. When you get back to posting great things about photography, then I will come back. I guess your Anti-Christian posters will have to debate with themselves:) Anyway thank you for the great products and photography information that you use to post that has been of great help to many of us."

So you see he did not say he was "leaving" as you interpret it...

oh well honestly, it's better for him and fjblau to not get into the tangles. The way I see it, is he said "I have decided to say goodbye to your blog" and so, it's goodbye.

Gary, after you blocked me I gave up on posting here again, because my feeling was that this is your blog and you have every right to block me or anyone else if you want to, but after reading this post that you made about me, which I feel was unnecessary, I created a new Xanga account just so I could respond your post. Gary you said in this post that I said "I'm out of here, and I will not be returning to this blog", if you are going to quote me, then at least give me the common decency of posting what I actually said.

Here is the link to the actual post, read the second post:

If the link doesn't work here is my post from October 2, 2008:

"Gary, I have decided to say goodbye to your blog. When you get back to posting great things about photography, then I will come back. I guess your Anti-Christian posters will have to debate with themselves:) Anyway thank you for the great products and photography information that you use to post that has been of great help to many of us."

Maybe you don't know this but I have admired you as a photographer and businessman, and have spent over $1,000 on your products over the years.  But, I have grown more and more concerned about your making light of Christians and Christianity here on your blog. You can believe whatever you want, but why do you constantly make fun of Christianity and we Christians? Why is it that you are somehow more tolerant, more openminded, more enlightened then we Christians? Whatever happened to the Gary to had great photography tips?

Okay, so truth be told, I came for the gushy engagement story and the fun photography talk.... and I'm sad it's descended into a sociopolitical soap opera.

Christians are regularly generalized as stupid, weak and pathetic in the comments here. And it's just because it's easy to get punchy when we're all nicknames and avatars... truth is, if you got us all in a room, we'd likely find a lot of common ground - if nothing else, we'd get busy jabbering about 101 uses for our lightspheres and whaletails! We don't know one another, nor one anothers' stories, and this has dehumanized the interaction.... I suspect if timray and fjblau were face to face, they'd be able to engage in spirited, respectful discourse. It is sad that it has just gotten plain ugly in these comments...

And I'm human... I fully admit that while Gary will mock Bush and Cheney with "we bring the war to you - prague edition"... I long for the day he will make a "New York Edition" and make fun of the radicals who brought horror onto our soil for the promise of virgins in paradise. Yeah, I know, it will never happen, but I can long for the day... after all, he recently thanked some Republicans (which I never thought I'd see)!! And I think I'd be just giddy if Gary ever posted some information on how much the Democratic leaders in congress may have known all of this was coming... but WOW - now that I think about it, I'm not sure I could handle that level of giddy.

I'm always encouraged when Melissa interjects some common sense and compassion into the comments.... it gives me hope that if I met Gary in person, he'd judge me for me as a whole person instead of how he's judged me up until now. After all, he had the good sense to ask her to marry him, and while she and I don't align on political issues, she seems funny, considerate and reasonable.

So, I keep checking back - in part because I want a new point and shoot, and I get great product reviews on them here from time to time, and in part because as a Christian, it keeps me grounded in how a lot of people view us as a whole, and it makes me more sensitive to living out my faith daily in ways that honor God.

One final thought - GO RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone want to talk baseball :>)

Tim and I HAVE had several very nice offline conversations.

I do enjoy debating creationists, I don't deny that... shooting fish in barrel, but still fun... I think in general, we did pretty well on that one, with a few notable exceptions.

As for the politics... well, it happens on every blog, chatroom, bulletin board and every bbs (yeah I'm old) that I've ever been on.

As for christians in general here? Well.. when I get told I have "no morals" and am a "reprobate soul", yeah you're going to hear some flak back. Interestingly in all the times I've posted here in debate or otherwise, not one single christian has asked me what I DO believe. I find that odd, because I always ask people what they believe. Because it matters to me at an intellectual and spiritual level. It means nothing to me with regards to the state of their morals, or even their soul. But I don't think christians can say the same thing about their faith. It requires that anyone who disagrees with them (regardless of how) is relegated to eternal hell. Well, I find that just a little bit judgmental and silly... which is why it leads to the occasional derision here.

But yeah, if we got together, I'm sure we'd find more interesting things to talk about... like the Miami Dolphins and using CTO filters with tungsten white balance! If fact, if anyone here is in Seattle and EVER wants to get together to prove it, you know how to find me!

@ fjblau.... My apologies that anyone has judged you morally - I don't read every comment, every day, but if I'd seen that, I'd have thumped them on the head with my Bible (just kidding, but I'd have taken issue with it)... and I'm tickled pink (since it's Breast Cancer Awareness month.... "check your boobies!") that you and timray have friendly offlines. Wildly good to know.

I guess I've not encountered the tone of political discourse on most of the blogs I frequent that I've experienced here - except on Huffington Post, maybe. Guess I need to get out more. I read a lot of opinions on both sides - old habit from my days on debate team in college :>)

So thanks for setting me straight on a few things from your standpoint.

I'll be away for a few days, because I'll be getting ready for two nights of baseball @ the Trop!!

TimRay - I'll miss you buddy - keep up the good work!

Frank - If I'm ever in Seattle - lunch is on me. While I won't hide my faith under a bushel - I'll say grace to myself and we'll toast the new president and hopefully ENTIRELY new House and Senate!

Peace.

Its Gary's blog, he can do what he wants.   It would probably be easy to create a new Xanga account and come back as an alter ego though.

And jamie, this blog isn't like a forum, this blog is like Meth.   Once viewed, your addicted!!

I do appreciate the political information, which I read daily, but I must admit I miss the photo stuff too.  This blog is the first one I read after any big economic news is broken.
