 TODAY'S MARKET CRASH
Brings the DOW to the lowest level of the year.  This, despite a massive government sending of cash to individuals (that's all gone), The Federal Reserve lowering the prime to 2%, and the rescue of Bear Stearns.  There's nothing else it can do.
What's next, lower interest rates to 1%?  That would crank inflation.  They absolutely CANNOT lower interest rates at this point because inflation is raging.  RAGING!  This will absolutely hammer the middle class.
People like most of you out there - food prices are going to skyrocket.  Fuel prices are going to skyrocket (it just passed $140/barrel for the first time ever - we used to joke that oil would be $100 someday - it's poised at this rate to hit $200 before too long!)

How will your life change when fuel hits $9 a gallon?  The banks are plummeting.  And what REALLY worries me is that the credit cards are now being sold in commercialized funds - just like what collapsed housing.  Holy smokes when those CDO's crash (AND THEY WILL) then the very VERY last bastion of survival in the consumption-hungry USA - the credit card - will disappear like home loans.
Can you imagine what your life would be like if your credit cards were taken away?  With fuel at $9/$10 per gallon...?  What will happen to General Motors?  Then the jobs that go with that?  With those people out of work, do they go on welfare?  Where do they get support with an army spending huge amounts in Iraq?  The USA has spent OVER $550 BILLION DOLLARS IN IRAQ!  Great investment!  Lots of progress going on over there in a war that's lasted longer than our involvement in World War II - and there is no end in sight.

Inflation will increase unemployment, spending will slow dramatically, which will increase joblessness, which will increase pressure on the government's social programs.  The U.S. is completely broke (massive deficits, plummeting dollar).  Every time I exchange my U.S. Traveler's checks for EUROS here, and see how little I get - it just shows how bad things are in the U.S. and it is only beginning.  There is absolutely nothing that I can see that is holding up the economy - except for no realization that there is no basis for values.
What options are left for keeping the economy from crashing?  I can't see any.  Any ideas?

Gary - there is one thing holding the economy: the folk on the other side of the current account ledger. But that is really immaterial. The country needs to focus on improving the lot of everyone and move away from the policy of standing on the other guys' head as the water rises.

It is OK that people work hard and work 3 or 4 jobs but to do so in the midst of fear at every little thing creates tension, fear and a swollen prison population. Imagine the pain that a middle class parent feels when after a lifetime of work and paying into health insurance one of their children or their wife gets sick .... then they find out that the insurance stops at the hospital gate.

Proper health care and education is the foundation of a long-lasting strong nation. The most progressive countries with the highest standards of living all start with proper health care.

Best regards - Bruce

"To address the housing market woes, rising energy and food prices, and eroding consumer confidence, the U.S. needs a second stimulus package, said Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in an interview with Fox Business Network.

“Consumer confidence is at an all-time low, gas prices are at all-time high and the housing market still hasn’t been stabilized which is putting a lot of pressure on the Fed to juice up the economy at the same time its dealing with inflation,’’ said Obama, in an interview with Alexis Glick of FOX Business Network. “Having a serious energy plan and looking at the possible speculation in the oil futures market could have a difference at least in alleviating some of the upward pressure on oil prices.”

According Obama, there’s a need for another stimulus package and a permanent $1,000 tax cut for individuals and families. He said all of those actions combined could “get the economy back on the right track.”

I predict the massive growth of Lightsphere production will cover the loss of GM jobs.

Gary - what about removing the oil speculators and their influence to the crashing of the global economy? Testimony given this week says that it would bring oil down to the 2 buck range.

The worst thing that could happen is for fuel to be in the $2 range. With fuel prices heading higher and higher, new technologies will wipe out the need for crude oil. That is the only thing that is going to stop our dependence on oil - high prices.

Great post, Gary!  Do the newspapers you see and the people you talk to over there understand that they will not be insulated from a serious crash.  I believe 40% of US debt is owned by foreign countries.  That's what, at least three trillion?  Our crash would precipitate a global recession, if not a collapse of "biblical proportions."  It's maddening to think the US is on the brink of financial failure.  It reminds me of what I've read about France going broke after funding the American Revolution or the Soviets going broke after the war in Afganistan.

I sure don't know how to fix it, but one thing's for certain, we will have to cut government spending and programs.  I don't see how we can avoid it.  We also need a president and congress that at least have a clue about economics.  Bush didn't.  Obama and McCain sure don't.  McCain is pointing his fingers at commodities speculators and doesn't even understand what they do.  Our congress sure doesn't.  I'm tired of big government Republicans and Democrats; they need to be replaced.  We need a radical break with our current spending habits.  A freeze on spending won't even be enough.  But I don't think the American people understand that yet either.  I think I will vote Libertatian this time around!

I see tough times ahead.  Man, I hate to be doom and gloomer.  Better remember how to plant a garden and then go buy some seeds!  What do you know about canning food?!!  Lee

Well, one day Gold and Silver will be worth nothing, biblical prophecy.  I think we need congress to give whatever president in office the power of line item veto..it could get rid of a lot of waste..

I do think the war in Iraq was a great investment! Not one terrorist has hit America since 9/11.  Maybe you should go back and watch the towers fall and the pentagon crumble and you'll remember how it was to watch innocent people die.  I'd rather fight the gutless torrorist in Iraq then here in the United States of America.   Or maybe 9/11 didnt bother you that much!  And quit acting like you care about middle class America, because you are not one. I can live fine without credit cards.  It's called not being piggish.

@Cravehunter -

Are you for real?
And I bet you still believe Iraq had weapons of mass distruction... Your the type who also wants to go to war with Iran while we are at it, because someday maybe someday they will enrich uranium for nuclear power...

Yet North Korea has and we don't do shit about it... Why? we are not interested in rice... Crude oil seams more $$$ savvy.

On the 911 issues:

I get upset when I read shit from people like you who just use it as an excuse.
I was there, I lived it, I lost 3 causins that day amoung many friends.

We're not in Iraq over the 911 issues, That was Afghanistan and we hardly see shit about that in the news anymore.
Hold up, all they have is huge mountains no oil there... hmmm Iraq does have oil... Lets destroy it and let Halliburton
rebuild it... Cheney owns Halliburton...

So please look around and inform yourself, have an open mind and see things as could have, and did realy happen.

Here are a couple of clips to assist you with that.
