 brilliant and about time!!!
Matt commented below about Sony's new flash system that allows you to pivot twist sideways.  This thing is GREAT for Lightsphere users.
I have been saying for (has it been?) years now that camera brackets are too slow and cumbersome *(especially when shooting multiple bodies) and that it is so much faster to turn a conventional head sideways and pivot-twist them with my flash products.  Now Sony (formerly Minolta) has figured this out with their flash unit.
Sony is really tough on keeping their innovations to themselves (Betacam, Minidisk, etc) and they don't even have a standard hotshoe mount.  So the chances of Nikon or Canon having a swivel-mount head is probably slim to none, but Bravo to Sony for making a product work in a more sensible way.  I have been baffled for years as to why flashes had the heads they do, so I invented a diffuser to work the way I think heads should work.

Is that photo correct that the display ALSO pivots sideways??  Brilliant as well!

Gary:

While I see the advances here that Sony is making, I'm still using a very compact Newton bracket with my flash and Lightsphere.  It flips extremely quickly and is very compact, whereas my old Stroboframe R7 was huge and cumbersome.  I would never use a bracket like that with today's gear.

My issue with just flipping a flash head is that it wears out the flash mechanism.  Several people have told me that their rotating function on the flash is now very stiff and problematic.  That's why I keep using a compact flash bracket.

I'm not saying all brackets are good and that something like a Lightsphere or a Demb Flip-It diffuser should only be used with a bracket.  But there are some brackets that do work quick and work well with a Lightsphere and other diffusers.

If you look at my avatar, you can see me with a Lightsphere, but the Newton bracket is there as well.

I'm just saying...

Anyway, for those who don't like brackets, obviously, a Lighsphere works just fine when you flip the flash.  To each, his own.

Wow! Thanks for the heads up.  I love my little Sony Alpha, but have to use a bracket.  This is great news.  I'll have to pick one up when they come out in September.  I wonder, do you know which size lightsphere will fit it?

Remember Gary the hotshoe mount is not Sony's, it's Minolta's. Although the flash looks good I hope Sony is not making it themselves as the reliability of the flash mechanism would concern me if it was. Of course now all Sony have to do is start making some half decent lenses.
