 PROPOSED BABY NAMES

The other night, we were having dinner with Lindsay and Jesse and we were coming up with hypothetical baby names.  I have become deeply excited about parenthood.  I think that it will be tremendously weird, extremely humbling and test what I am made of.  I think I have the capabilities and poise now that I am way more mature than ever before in my life, (I skipped an entire generation) With the experience of managing employees, I know the importance of boundaries and clearly defined metrics, expectations, goal evaluation, periodic feedback and analysis, and progress review.  Oh I am just kidding.
As much as I wouldn't want to spoil a kid, I'm sure I'll do some of that.  One thing I know is that I am going to be around all the time, being as to how I don't have a job.  And I wonder if I'm going to be annoying with all of my stories and lessons...

Someday Junior or Juniorette is going to read this blog, and maybe even my journal.  So we were thinking of names, and kid - here's what came up that Dad thought of naming you:
1) BOY- "Rack Force Fong".  I think having a name like, "Rack Force" would be cool for a boy.  I'm going to teach my boy how to fight.  In fact, I want him to be super tough.  I was saying that just out of the blue I'm going to backhand this kid, sending him flying off his high chair to prepare him for the hard knocks of life.  And with a name like "Rack Force" I think when he walks into a crowded room, it will part like those old western movies.
2) BOY - "Buck" Fong.  I just thought that would be a cool name for a 1/2 asian kid.  Buck.  So people could say, "You know Gary, he always knew how to make a buck!  Get it?  AAHAHAHA.  Shaddap
3) BOY - "Carl" Fong.  Because my wife's last name is Carl, she would be Melissa Carl - Fong, and my son would be Carl Fong.  She says no go.  Actually I got vetoed on all of these names.  I really like "Rack Force"

Melissa has some cool girl names she's been bouncing around.  We aren't planning on having kids this year but next year.  First one is going to be a boy, followed by a girl.

Check out Nymbler.com. It helps you find a good baby name based on your favorites. My wife has been on it non-stop.

Happy New Year!

I see you are already pre-visualizing a Boy, huh?

Rack Force?  Sounds too much like Delta Force!  Rack Force?  Too similar to the "Moon Unit Zappa" or Dweezle Zappa kind of names.  With names like that, you'd better teach that kid to fight!  :)

As for teaching him to fight, well ok... we have Chinese and Korean influences going on here I see.  Are you going to do the Zen thing with him or going to the traditional of Gung Fu (Chinese way of saying Kung Fu) or Tae Kwon Do?  Or are you going to start your own style like Bruce Lee did with Jeet Kune Do?  Being so close to Seattle and since you have known key players in Bruce Lee's life in Seattle, I'm sure you will have plenty of good advice from family and friend about how to go about it.

Have a great New Year!

Russ

My goodness Gary, enjoy life with your wife first before having kids..you just got married.  Go out and enjoy one another first for a few years..get to know her deeply..let her get to know more of you..Yes having children will be good but you two need to enjoy each other and life first. Don't jump into it without experiencing a lot of things with your wife first.

Hey Russ, I met Bruce when I was seven, Danny Inosanto's studio was by my old house and he used to come to pepy's all the time, and I shot Shannon Lee's wedding. Oh and I used to play tennis with Jim Kelly from "Enter the Dragon". How is that for weird!

Gary:

That's cool!  I told you once before that my uncle trained with Bruce Lee in Hong Kong under Yip Man... Wing Chun of course.  He remembered Bruce very well.

Danny Inosanto was Bruce's top Jeet Kune Do student!  Great to see the two of them in Game of Death - although I can't believe how they butchered that movie with the edits and substitute actor for Bruce!  :(

Your connection with the Lee family goes deep!  It must have been interesting to shoot Shannon's wedding.  And tennis with Jim Kelly?  How was his game?  :)

Very cool!

I did read your post Gary..you said you plan on starting having kids next year...that means you will be barely married a year if you start next year...do you think you will miss all that time you could have enjoyed life with your wife first?  Just something for you to think about because you just got married man.  I'm so glad I never had kids for years (not year), gave me time to enjoy life with my wife and develop something that will last until we die.

Jim Kelly is a seniors champion. I think he was the regional doubles champion for the L.A. area when we played. He is SUCH a nice, gentle man. I have also never seen anybody nearly as fit as he is. Danny is so nice too. He let me take a spin on Bruce's sticky hands. He would come to Pepy's and the first time I met him I walked up and said, "You don't look so tough to me" and he made a big smile. I think he hurt his back so he was moving kind of slow, but still just a humble, humble person.

I hadn't thought about Jim until you mentioned all the ties to Bruce. We used to talk about Bruce a lot. Oh Russ - get this. My grandfather's grave is about 10 yards from Bruce and Brandon's gravesite. How is that for weird? I told Linda that too because two weeks before Shannon's wedding I went to visit my grandfather's site, and we discovered Bruce/Brandon's site and we sat on the bench. The Lee family was so tripped out by how weird that was. I still think it's weird.

Gary:

Man, that IS weird!  In Chicago, a lot of the Chinese are buried in the same cemetery.  Years back, the Chinese association in Chinatown bought up a huge amount of the land in this one cemetery and then sold them to the various families here.  So being in the same cemetery wouldn't be such a big deal.  But in your case, being that your grandfather's gravesite is so close to Bruce and Brandon's and then you end up shooting the wedding of the daughter/sister Shannon... that is just too weird!

My uncle once showed me some of the sticky hands techniques of Wing Chun.  I was just a teenager at the time he showed me and was a student of Tae Kwon Do.  At first, I couldn't understand why anyone would want to deal with this technique until we got going faster and faster.  In time, I understood why it was such an effective technique and exercise.

Guess we have some things in common, huh?  Your love for guitars/music, martial arts and your weird sense of humor seem to parallel me.  Now THAT's weird too!  :)

Yeah Russ that is weird. Sticky hands is a great-great technique. So is standing southpaw. We ARE alike - we both use the same diffusers! haha!

No offense, but Carl immediately reminds of a W.C. Fields movie routine: "I'm looking for a Mr LaFong...Carl LaFong. Capital L, small a, capital F, small o, small n, small g. Carl Lafong..."

Would you consider the middle name "La"? Even better: if it's a girl you could name her
Carla Fong! Somewhere in Philadelphia, old W.C. is turning in his grave.

my wife and I recently had our first child and it's been amazing. yes, I'm glad we had the opportunity to travel and spend time together before our baby but having a baby is like your wedding times 1000 in terms of excitement and amazement. choosing a name is an entirely different mission.. we went through 3 baby name books before deciding a name.. good luck! my last name is Ahn and is pronounced almost like "on" as in on and off... if I had a son, I wanted to name him Rock but got the veto from the misses. after having our daughter and literally shooting over 300 photos in the first week, I remembered what you said in your NY seminar and it made complete sense... the market is huge for baby photography! when you get a chance, visit my site at www.jamesahn.com to see a few photos I took of my daughter.

speaking of bruce lee... i have this ongoing debate with my college buddies about bruce lee vs. mike tyson... =) it's a tough one. How sick would it be to see Bruce Lee in the UFC.. after all he did pioneer mixed martial arts and who could beat him in his weight class?

Rock On! awesome hilarious. Rack Force On!

Mike Tyson would destroy Bruce with one punch. That would be if he could get to him. Bruce had a really fast dodge. But he admired boxers. He studied films of Ali to come up with changes to his style. In fact, that's how he got to the southpaw, boxing stance in JKD.

You should go for multiples, definitely! That way you finish in phases... when you're done with diapers, you're done with them....

Can't wait to see what potty training devices you invent!!

You know, the LightSphere looks a tad bit like the suction device they use in delivery rooms to retrieve the "stubborn" ones!

I agree with Gary on the Tyson vs Bruce Lee issue.  I don't care how much training one has... get in a good punch and out you go.  But catching Bruce Lee would be the issue for Tyson.  Bruce was VERY fast compared to many other martial artists.

Speaking of the UFC, look who usually wins at events like this... Ground Fighters!  Guys like Royce Gracie whose style is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu win on the ground.  Interesting to note that many of the Kung Fu guys don't seem to do well on these events!

And Gary... yeah... it's funny that I use the same lighting diffusers as you, huh?  Wonder how that happened?  :)
