HOW COME WINDOWS VISTA IS SO BAD

I just bought an HP Pavillion laptop computer because we're using Quickbooks Enterprise version and I tried to install that and Quicken - either one will NOT WORK.  It just sits there and then says the installation was interrupted before it could finish.  And that's it!  Can anybody give me some advice?

You might want to try right-clicking on the installation file (install.exe, or whatever) and choosing 'run as administrator'. A lot of problems occur with Vista because installers try to write files to a protected directory but don't have access.

Try disabling UAC. I find that to be the problem with most software installation issues with Windows Vista.

The quickest way to do this is to launch "msconfig" from the Windows Button. You should be able to just type that in.

Clicks on the "Tools" tab. On the select list go down to "Disable UAC" line and click the Launch button. Restart the computer and try to install Quickbooks.

I usually just leave UAC off. it disables all the warning / confirmation screens.

If you want to re-enable start msconfig again, tools tab, "Enable UAC" and Launch Button.

Gary

You shouldn't have the issues with installing Enterprise as it IS configured for Vista (which personally I will not use Vista yet). If you have problems at all, call the support for Enterprise. If THAT doesn't work, then give me a call and I will call MY techs.(HAH....your QBooks Guru has a special dept..smirk, 'cause you only have the BEST people working for you)

P.S. Disabling the UAC should do it though....actually I am ordering 2 new computers soon, but I am having them install XP on there rather than Vista until next year. If you are really only using it for Enterprise and Quicken, you should be fine.

Gary - don't shoot the OS if the apps aren't Vista certified.  I run Vista and it's fine.  The problems I had initially were related to the BIOS of my Toshiba tablet.  Once the new BIOS came out, it ran much better.  Vista is far more secure than XP as well.  If I were you, I'd hammer the Quickbooks tech support people.  Also be sure you have admin rights in Vista.

You should consider using Microsoft Office Accounting for Small Business.  It's written on top of the Office applications that you're already familiar with and it's very easy to use.  Or if your business needs more specialization in accounting, consider Microsoft Dynamics and Microsoft CRM.   http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/products/small-business-financials/default.aspx#overview

Gary>>There's a reason Intuit has over 90% of small business accounting and is rapidly getting midmarket with Enterprise. You don't have to hammer the QB tech people: having Enterprise you have a tech dept in the States and NOT outsourced (and I had something to do with that too) I have beta tested & been certified in all these products, so I do know what I am talking about (well in this anyway..smirk)

The tech geeks I work with (my special tech dept)...yeah, Enterprise works with Vista, but there's alot of programs that do not.Every techie I have talked to likes the security of Vista, but they ALL told me to use XP for the next 6 momths at least....that's why I am waiting on Vista. Some older version programs I Have will NOT work with it well (some clients have older versions and have not upgraded). That's why I said if you are only running a few programs, Vista will be fine

We just purchased a small HP notebook with Vista Premium for when we are on the road and love it. It is harder to get use to using as its new to me but I love it. We puchased it from Best Buy and ghad them take all the crap off of it and Scott could had done a much better job.  We used Adobe Lightroom at the wedding this past weekend for a presentation during dinner and everyone loved it!  So we know lightroom works with it so far anyway.  But I was also told by our local computer store to wait on vista.

OMG--didn't I tell you how stupid vista is?! theg's solution should work though--the os is ridiculous; i had the funkiest error and it took 3 months to fix. I was about to wipe it but my semester started and it's a major hassle. oh and wait until you see how much of your hard drive it takes up! my total vista stuff is up to around 19 gigs--totally ridiculous... your problem is actually a common one though--b/c ofthe added security of the os, you get tripped up and have to right click and run as administrator. so soooooooo stupid.

I've been using Vista Premium for the last 6 months on an HP Pavillion and I must say that it has been very problematic with lots of my older applications. Photoshop CS2 crashes randomly when using some of the plug-in filters that worked flawlessly on XP. Some of my older slide show apps such as ACDSee's FotoAngelo will crash everytime when trying to build the slide show. Other apps won't even launch. I also have the UAC disabled. By the way, I'm a software engineer and have been intimately familiar with every version of Microsoft Windows since inception. They should have provided better compatibility with older apps EVEN if it means letting the user know that they may compromise security. At least give the user a choice. I have a significant amount of investment in software that runs on XP and not on Vista.

Also, the new Microsoft Office 2007's user interface is frustrating since I was used to the old Office menus and UI. The new Command bar style is the biggest problem and consumes so much screen real estate. To make matters worse there is no way to disable it and use the previous menu style interface.

I've always have been a staunch Windows supporter and have developed many hard-core applications for Windows and I cannot, with good conscience, recommend Window's Vista to any users previously familiar with XP if they are thinking of upgrading (downgrading?).

My two cents,
GQ

I tried turning off the UAC and it did nothing. I am trying to install regualar quicken... It doesn't say anything on the box about vista. Maybe my mother in-law needs to get a different version. DUNNO!!

I own a small company which designs and builds high end computers for people who need high end graphics productivity computers. Folks such as photographers, architects, CAD draftspersons, scientists, etc. Personally, I've been building computers since the first 4.77Mhz DOS clones.

I still remember the first experience I had setting the local time and time zone on a Vista platform. It was ALL WRONG to the way I understood how to do it since Windows 95. I remember thinking, "Why in the heck did they have to change something as simple as that?" which lead me to wonder what else did they change?

Makes ya kinda wonder about their well-touted "usability labs" and just what gets tested there. BTW, I used to be a software tester for Harbinger Software here in Atlanta so I know all too well how software is designed and tested. Quite often it has no relation to the needs of customers.

I've had problems with Vista too. They have yet to fix some glitches.
Good Luck.
